There is a close connection between the development of Islamic Arts and the effort to make worship more productive, strong, dignified, fertile, open to inner peace and spiritual pleasure in the masjids joined. Despite the structural and functional change that the mosque has undergone today, its relationship with Islamic arts has never deteriorated; on the contrary, it was enriched with new styles and forms that fit the process.
Undoubtedly, our masjids lost the structure of a complex which is the equivalent of yesterday’s social facilities. The units such as Darülkurra (Quran reading school), Madrasah, Darüşşifa (hospital), Imaret (almshouse), Tabhane (guesthouse for travelers and students), Sıbyan Mektebi (Ottoman primary school), Darülhadis (hadith school) are no longer in adjoining order with the mosque. This affected both the design of the main masjid and the ornamental arts which were performed in similar units. Another revolutionary change is observed with the level achieved by the construction technologies. The introduction of concrete, iron and steel, titanium, and more in the construction of Islamic places of worship, allowed to replace traditional forms with more practical, partially superficial solutions, especially in revetment systems and bearing elements. As a matter of fact, architects and artists performing ornamental arts have faced the challenge of developing new solutions in accordance with the new forms. Despite all these revolutionary innovations, the unchanging offer to be open to spiritual pleasure, as well as its design and decoration, could not break the ties of an Islamic place of worship with arts.
